Behind the Lens Rachael Watson: Making the Jump

If you missed out last post, an awesome DIY idea for center pieces/guest gifts, check it out here!

Sometimes I get asked the question, “How did you decide to start your business?” or varying forms of the question. It’s a really good question to ask and I always love sharing part of my journey. While there were many things that influenced my decision to start my business one of the things that gave me the courage to jump in head first was an experience I had in college. Get ready for some throw back photos, because they are about to come your way.

I went to Judson University just down the road from Chicago and loved my time there! Judson offered the degree I was looking for and more importantly, they were starting a golf team and were interested in me joining it. I couldn’t wait for Freshman year of college to start!

I loved every minute of Golf. I made great friends on the team and we share so many fun memories together from Spring Break Golf trips to early morning training sessions and study hours. I loved getting to be a part of the team.

Right before our first Spring Break Golf Tournament Freshman year!

PS. That’s the whole Women’s Golf team. We Rocked out.

Right before Senior year the golf team was cut unexpectedly. It was the right choice to make, but I was so disappointed. No more practice, team P90X in the AM or long runs for goofing around at practice too much. I wasn’t sure what my Senior year was going to look like now, but I knew I didn’t want to coast to the graduation.

I was talking with one of my friends about this when she told me she was trying out for cheer. Now I’m no cheerleader, but I had always found dance fascinating. I love watching trained dancers in every style so I jokingly told her that was a great idea and I was going to try out for our school dance team.

Where is this going? Well, the more I thought about it, the more I wanted to do it, but wow. What a scary thought. I had zero dance experience and I wanted to try out for my college dance team…what!?

I guess this is where everything comes full circle. I took a leap of faith and tried out. To be perfectly clear, I wasn’t very good, but I told the Coach I really wanted to join the team and while I may not be the best, I would work harder than anyone else.

By some miracle, she told me I could join the team so Senior year started and I started Dance practice. While I was never the best, I found out that I love dance! Dance moves something inside of me that I didn’t even know was there. When I dance, everything else disappears for a while and I learned to not let fear hold me back.

So when people ask me about how I decided to start my business, I think of a lot of things, but one of the things I think about is the lesson Judson athletics taught me about being bold and pursuing the things I love.
