Q&A Friday- My First Camera

My very first camera… If you’re a photographer, you may be curious! Weather as a pro, hobbyist or wedding couple, it’s interesting!

When I first started shooting weddings in 2014 I shot with a Canon Rebel T3i.

Now I laugh thinking about it, but I was so proud of my camera! It even had a cool screen that flipped out. (And it was a great starter camera!) I remember the day I bought it. It was yet another shockingly cold December morning as I pulled up into PJ’s Camera. I had been toying with the idea of starting a photography business for a few months at this point. While I had, had a camera back in college I had broken the screen and replacing it cost more than the camera.

I walked in not really even knowing what questions to ask, but the lady behind the counter, Margaret, was patient. She asked me questions, helped me with terminology and ultimately recommended the T3i to me as someone starting out, not really sure if this crazy idea would stick.

I told her I wasn’t buying today, but I would think about it and probably be back.

As I sat in my car mulling everything over I did three things.

  1. I called my husband of barley 2 months and asked him if he thought this was a good idea.
  2. Called my Dad, the entrepreneur, to ask if he thought this was a wise idea.
  3. Then I checked my bank account, I just enough extra.

Side note… I’m so grateful for my husband Blake! I had graduated college 7 months ago, my seasonal job had timed out and I was currently working for my parents. This was a crazy idea! Even now I can’t believe he not only said go for it, but has been intentional in supporting my dream every day since then. I could not feel more loved, supported and grateful. 🙂

I was still sitting in the parking lot. This was crazy. … but everything was lining up. As I sat there in the parking lot I thought to myself, “What was the worst that could happen?”

I walked right back into PJ’s Camera, found Margaret and told her I was in!

If you’re just starting out or looking for a great starter camera, check out the Canon Rebel T7! It just came out and is a fantastic beginner camera. If you’ve been shooting a while and are looking to move up to a full frame camera, but aren’t ready to jump to the Canon 5D Mark III or IV then check out the Canon 6D Mark II.

Thanks for reading with me! If you have questions for Q&A Friday, send them my way! I always love answering your questions. 🙂

Till Next Time,

PS. In case you’re wondering, I do still have my T3i, but I haven’t shot a wedding with it in years. 😉
