Each year, Blake and I take a long weekend away for our wedding anniversary. It’s become one of my favorite traditions and something I look forward to all year. : )
We’ve explored some incredible places together over the years. Quiet forest preserves in Florida, oceanside cliffs, open desert landscapes in Arizona, and walkable downtown neighborhoods with tucked-away charm. It’s been such a fun way to experience new places together and get photos that mark each season of our life.
But here’s the thing… none of those locations were places I just magically stumbled upon.
Every single time, I’ve been incredibly grateful for local photographers who shared their favorite spots, gave honest recommendations, and helped us pick a location that fit what we were looking for.
And that’s exactly what I want to do for you.
If you’re looking for a nature-filled backdrop for your engagement session, here are a few of my absolute favorite places in the area.
Cantigny Park
Why I love it: With 500 acres of gardens, architecture, and open space, this is one of the most versatile locations in our area and I LOVE it! You get hand planted gardens that rotate a few times a year, the iconic rose garden, mansion with stunning white pillars, wide open green spaces, treelines, and dreamy pathways all in one place. No two sessions are the same. : )
Fun Fact: I actually grew up working at Cantigny Golf and my sister got married in the Rose Garden.
If you love variety or are looking for a romantic garden look, this is the top choice.

Blackwell Forest Preserve
Why I love it: With roughly 1,300 acres, this location has a number of beautiful paths surrounded by trees and a beautiful lake backdrop. My favorite part of Blackwell though is the ability to get above the treeline giving this location a totally unique feel.
Fun Fact: On a clear day, you can actually see the Sears Tower from the top of the hill!
If you love wide-open skies and forested backdrops, this is a strong option.

St James Farm Forest Preserve
Why I love it: With over 600 acres, trails, tree lines, open fields, and those signature yellow barns, this location gives you visual variety without feeling busy.
Fun Fact: This property was owned by Brooks McCormick, the first cousin of Robert R. McCormick who owned Cantigny.
This is a favorite location of couples, especially in the Fall because of the stunning color. It’s also a great option for a couple of photos with your dog before heading down the street to Cantigny.

Other Beautiful Options Worth Mentioning
Morton Arboretum
Massive property with a high emphasis on tree variety. A few gardens and many beautiful natural areas.

Wilder Mansion
Elegant, classic estate grounds with beautiful architecture.
