My First Dog- Kronos

In 2017, Blake and I had a friend who got stationed overseas. He asked us if we could watch his dog for a few months till he got back stateside.

Nine months turned into two and a half sweet years. : )

Kronos was my first dog ever and having him around, doing life with Blake and I, was incredibly special.

These days, Blake and I don’t have a dog of our own because we’re gone so much, but I know first hand how meaningful it is when couples want to include theirs.

You’re stepping into a new season together… and this pup has been part of your story. Maybe even the proposal!

If you’re thinking about including your dog, here are a few things to remember…

The Two BIGGEST Tips

1. Teach Your Dog “Heel” (Trust Me on This)

Most dogs are trained to sit.

Which means the second we say “sit”, they turn their back to the camera, sit down, and look up at you.

It’s what they’ve been trained to do! For photos, we just need something a little different. : )

If your dog knows (or can practice) “heel,” they’ll stay standing or sitting next to you and face forward… picture perfect!

It’s a small thing that makes a huge difference before your session.

2. Bring a Friend

This is the secret to keeping your session relaxed and fun.

Your friend can:

  • Walk your dog at the beginning while we get started
  • Hold the leash when needed
  • Step in and help grab attention when we’re shooting

And once we’ve gotten a few great photos with your dog, they can take them for a walk or head out so we can focus on the two of you.

Best of both worlds. : )

Quick Tips

Just a few simple things that go a long way!

  • Bring treats: This is the easiest way to get your dog’s attention and reward them
  • Bring a leash + bags: Not glamorous, but very necessary
  • Bring water: Especially for warmer sessions
  • Optional extras: A bandana, bow tie, or sign if you want to add a little personality

Some couples go all in with details. Others are just happy they made it there with their dog.

Both are perfect.

Final Thoughts

Including your dog in your engagement session is so worth it. It might take a few extra minutes… a little patience… and probably more than one attempt, but that’s totally normal!

Some of the best moments happen in between the “perfect” shots anyway. : )

So take a deep breath, enjoy this session and I can’t wait to meet your pup!

Much Love,
