How to Get Those Epic Veil Photos

For Brides

Let’s talk about the veil photo.

You know the one… light hitting just right, veil floating, everything feeling soft and effortless.

It’s one of my all-time favorite images to capture on a wedding day. And if you’ve been around here for a bit, it’s probably one of the signature RWP shots you’ve seen and loved.

Surprisingly, I didn’t wear a veil on our wedding day. It just didn’t feel like me, so I skipped it.

But now?

I wish I had those photos!

Both of my sisters felt the same way before their wedding. They loved the look of veil photos, but weren’t sure it felt like them for the ceremony… so I did what any reasonable older sister who is also a wedding photographer would do…

I bought them one. : )

Not a custom, perfectly matched veil. If that’s what you’re looking for, your bridal shop is absolutely the best place to find it. Just a simple, single-layer cathedral veil we could use for photos and then set aside for the rest of the day.

And it worked perfectly.

So if you’re dreaming about those soft, floating veil shots…

Here are the three things that make all the difference.

The Three Things That Make a Veil “Fly”

If those dreamy veil shots are important to you, here’s what matters most:

1. Longer Veil → More Variety

If you want that dramatic, flowing look… Go with a cathedral-length veil.

It gives us:

  • More fabric to work with
  • More movement
  • More variety in your photos

Shorter veils are still beautiful, but they won’t give you that same “floating” effect.

2. Lightweight Wins

The heavier the veil, the faster it drops. Look for something light and simple, especially if you’re prioritizing photos.

3. One Layer is Best

This is a big one. A single-layer veil will always move more naturally and give us that effortless swoopy look.

More Ways to Use Your Veil Throughout the Day

What some Brides may not realize is that we can use your wedding veil throughout SO MANY parts of your wedding day!

  • Getting ready
  • First look
  • Portraits with your groom
  • Golden hour
  • Even family photos

It’s one of those details that ties your entire look together and adds just a little extra.

Final Thoughts

At the end of the day, your veil is just one piece of your overall look.

But if those soft, romantic, floating veil photos are something you’ve been dreaming about… keep these things in mind as you search for that perfect fit.

I can’t wait to see how it all comes together!

Much Love,
